Doctor McEvedy attended the College from 1895-1898. His medical career included studying at Guy’s Hospital, London. A biographer described his success both in the medical and sporting fields as being due to “indomitable courage and the fighting spirit”.
He earned international sporting honours by representing England in rugby and on his return to New Zealand became not only a prominent doctor within the medical fraternity but an inspiring leader in sports administration. In 1934 he became Chairman of the New Zealand Rugby Union and later on Chairman of the New Zealand Boxing Council and Patron of the Combined St Pat’s Old Boys’ Athletic Association Club.
Dr McEvedy’s love for sport and true sportsmanship moved him to promote the spirit of athletic competition by donating the shield that bears his name. His belief that to strive hard is the true measure of success was embodied in the 2008 competition when the College won back the Shield after a number of years and was reflected again when the College lost by only the smallest margin in 2009.
The St Patrick’s College Foundation is proud to name its leading society membership after such an inspiring individual - his legacy lives on.
